How VAT Is Calculated
There are only two calculations, depending on whether your amount already includes VAT.
Adding VAT (amount excludes VAT)
VAT = amount × 15 ÷ 100
Amount incl. VAT = amount × 1.15
Removing VAT (amount includes VAT)
VAT = amount × 15 ÷ 115
Amount excl. VAT = amount ÷ 1.15
The VAT Act calls 15/115 the “tax fraction”: rate ÷ (100 + rate). It gives you the VAT contained in a VAT-inclusive price.
Worked example
A plumber quotes N$ 2 400.00 excluding VAT. Later a customer pays the VAT-inclusive total and wants to know how much VAT it contains:
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Add VAT | N$ 2 400.00 × 15 ÷ 100 | N$ 360.00 VAT |
| Amount incl. VAT | N$ 2 400.00 + N$ 360.00 | N$ 2 760.00 |
| Remove VAT again | N$ 2 760.00 × 15 ÷ 115 | N$ 360.00 VAT |
| Amount excl. VAT | N$ 2 760.00 − N$ 360.00 | N$ 2 400.00 |
A common mistake: taking 15% of the VAT-inclusive amount. N$ 2 760.00 × 15% gives N$ 414.00, which overstates the VAT by N$ 54.00. Use 15/115 instead, or let the calculator above do it.

Namibia VAT FAQ
What is the VAT rate in Namibia?
The standard VAT rate in Namibia is 15%, set by section 6(1) of the Value-Added Tax Act 10 of 2000. Some supplies are zero-rated (0%), such as goods exported from Namibia, and some are exempt. The 15% rate is unchanged as of November 2026.
How do I calculate the VAT included in a price?
Multiply the VAT-inclusive amount by 15/115, which the VAT Act calls the tax fraction. For N$ 1 150.00 the VAT is N$ 150.00 and the amount excluding VAT is N$ 1 000.00. Do not take 15% of the inclusive amount: that overstates the VAT.
When must a business register for VAT in Namibia?
When its taxable supplies exceeded N$ 1 000 000 in the past 12 months, or are expected to exceed N$ 1 000 000 in the next 12 months. The threshold was raised from N$ 500 000 with effect from 1 October 2024, and you must apply to NamRA within 21 days of becoming liable.
Do I have to issue a tax invoice for every sale?
A VAT-registered supplier must provide a tax invoice when the customer asks for one. No tax invoice is required where the total consideration is paid in cash and does not exceed N$ 1 000. Namibia's VAT Act has no separate abridged tax invoice, so every tax invoice needs the full set of particulars.
How does this calculator round the amounts?
It works in cents and rounds the VAT to the nearest cent, then derives the other amount, so the amount excluding VAT plus the VAT always equals the amount including VAT. If your invoices round the VAT per line, the total can differ by a few cents.
